A serial writer’s notebook ~ from the pen behind Lore of the Underlings, an episodic epic…
Here are the opening couple of lines that I’ve written for my next ebook of the Lore, Episode 6 ~ Three Meetings. Do you find them appetizing? Do they make you hungry for more?
A sweet smoke of billit meat flavored the air from fire pits where a flock of folk, women all or their young girls, were roasting the fresh-killed fowl to a turn. “Good morning indeed!” it seemed to say.
This is going to be my longest and most ambitious episode yet. I’m about 20% into it now, so it’s going to take a while. But at least it’s off to a tasty start!
Do you have any favorite opening lines?
Yum, I can taste that billit meat now!
Here’s a good opening line: “A screaming comes across the sky.” That’s the beginning of Gravity’s Rainbow. Doesn’t it make you want to just dive into the remaining 768 pages to find out what that sentence is all about?
I guess it’s the sound of those poor billits trying to fly off before their gooses were cooked… But even if not that’s an excellent open. Thanks for chiming in.
But who can beat this Hemingway-quality opening sentence from Richard Bowker’s thriller “Senator”:
“I am a politician.”
Right to the point. No fowl. No screaming.
